WeCWI Enterprise: Be a Report Writer

Course Details:
  • 14 sessions
  • 2 hours per session
  • Blended learning mode
  • Task-based assessments

Course Structure:

Session 1
  • Course orientation
  • Types, qualities & main parts of a report
  • Tasks:
    • Discuss the types of report, qualities of a good report, and components of a formal report.
    • Search on the internet for samples of formal reports, for examples: 1, 2 and 3.

Session 2

Session 3 (blended learning mode)
  • Research topics for their proposal
  • Appropriate and relevant online sources/articles/materials related to their topics
  • Appropriate tenses for different components in a report
  • Tasks:
    • Propose problem-based research topics for the proposal.
    • Select at least 5 online articles/materials to be used as supporting evidence and to be used as previous studies in the proposal.
    • Read online articles: 1 and 2.
    • Answer the following questions:
      • What are the three most commonly tenses used to produce the abstract?
      • What tense do we use when we want to describe details in background of the study?
      • Why do we use the present tense when we refer to figures and tables in the report?
      • What tense do we use when we write the methodology section?
      • Why do we normally use the passive voice in the methodology section?
      • Why are the present and past tenses appropriate to be used in different parts of a sentence?

Session 4
  • Eliciting & synthesising information from the selected articles/materials to write introductory section (READ examples 1 & 2) including the following sub-sections: 
  • Samples:
  • Tasks:
    • Prepare sub-headings under the introductory section of a proposal.
    • Do Internet search on questionnaires and select one which is readily available online.
    • Identify types of items found in the questionnaire and language used for the item construction.

Session 5 (blended learning mode)
  • Writing effective questionnaire items
    • Designing a questionnaire: 12 & 3 (READ)
    • Creating questionnaire using Google Form: 1 (READ) & 2 (WATCH)
  • Tasks: 

Session 6
  • Describe the methods appropriately in Methodology section
  • Write coherent paragraphs: 1 & 2 (READ)
  • Tasks: 
    • Discuss the details/essentials under Methodology section
    • Use appropriate language especially passive form to write coherent paragraph
  • Assessment:
    • Portfolio
      • Informal meetings with lecturer (10 mins per group)
      • Review of portfolio:
        • Discuss students’ progress and contribution of each group member.

Sessions 7-8

Sessions 9-10 (blended learning mode)
  • Collecting data
  • Analysing, interpreting & presenting data (READ)
  • Selecting relevant information to write the Findings & Discussion sections of a report (READ)
  • Tasks: 
    • Download and study the article entitled ‘Reporting Research Findings’ at this link.
      • Write one result/finding of your study and interpret it using the similar language structure as found in the article.
    • Go to RMIT University Learning Lab at this link and study the sample on how to write discussion of findings as shown in the article.
      • Write one discussion of your finding.
    • Print and submit your finding and discussion written in 2 paragraphs to your lecturer.

Session 11
  • Using appropriate language to write the Conclusions & Recommendations sections of a report (READ)
  • Identifying the features & writing a report Abstract/Summary using appropriate language
  • Tasks: 
    • Write the conclusions and recommendations and abstract/summary for group report writing.

Sessions 12-13

Session 14
  • Submission of a complete report.
  • Tasks: 
    • Submit final report.
